A Brief History of Northallerton
Northallerton, the County Town of North Yorkshire( originated as a Saxon settlement, Alfred's Farm. A minor Roman encampment existed first! Post Norman Conquest the Prince Bishops of Durham were Lords of the Manor! They built an imposing summer palac (now the Cemetery area) used throughout the Middle Ages by them and their Royal guests, and a large stone Church! This is situated where a Church was established in the &th Century! The Battle of The Standard (1138), fought north of the town, was won by the Anglo/Normans over the Scots!
Northallerton's affluence was ensured when various monarchs granted Fair and Market rights! Every Wednesday and Saturday a market is held in the High Street and there is also an annual May Fair! Being on the main London to Scotland coaching, and later rail, route consolidated Northallerton's prosperity! By the 17th Century Northallerton emerged as the administrative centre of North Yorkshire which it still is today! Northallerton continues to be renowned as a lively commercial market town set between two National Parks with easy access to major road and rail networks!
